FRANKLIN TWP: RE-ENACTOR DEPICTS WOMEN IN CIVIL WAR
Bridgewater Courier News
February 26, 2007

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP-The Meadows Foundation will present Civil War re-enactor Trish Chambers at the Hageman Farm, 209 S. Middlebush Road, Somerset section of Franklin, at 2 p.m. March 10.

Performing in period costume, Chambers tells a story that takes the listener into the world of Civil War women — a world that became more complex than knitting socks and baking bread.

These women were left behind to fend for themselves, to manage homes, businesses and plantations — roles which, until the war, traditionally had been performed by men.

With a special focus on New Jersey nurse Clara Barton and the work of the Sanitary Commission in improving hospital conditions, the presentation will discuss changes in society, economics and traditions that would redefine the roles of women forever.

Discussed will be the brave women of the North and the South who supported the war effort as nurses, spies, soldiers, government workers, authors, lecturers and fundraisers.

Their legacies paved a pathway for women of the 21st century.

Tickets cost $10 each and can be reserved by calling (732) 560-1977
